“The problem is happiness,” says Jeff Elgin over dinner: most people don’t know what it is, and those who have some inkling of it may well wreck their lives trying to achieve it. Jeff has come home to the Hinterlands to find that his family is breaking apart in a bizarre dash for happiness as it faces the threat of looming poverty. As the characters dodge and argue and make excuses and invent rationales for their behavior, they emerge finally as mirror images of each other: people who can feel the elusive specter of happiness receding with each passing day, and with a sense “ as morning approaches “ that all is exactly as it was meant to be.
